One of our little toys arrived yesterday, a Garmin inReach.

Compact and water resistant, it has a number of features that we like.

  • Interactive SOS to the 24/7 search and rescue monitoring center
  • We can pair with our iPad/iPhone using the free Earthmate App for access to downloadable maps
  • GPS routing plus built-in digital compass, barometric altimeter and accelerator, although hopefully we won’t be going that fast…

Since we are about to start moving around on Monday, perhaps the most important feature, for certain mothers out there, is the ability to track and share your location with family and friends. The map below is provided through our Garmin inReach MapShare page. Our website template does pinch the map a bit, so for a bigger view go directly to https://share.garmin.com/johncasey

It drops a bread crumb every 10 mins (other plans allow every 1 minute) to show where we are and where we’ve been. I think it can display where we’re going as well, but we likely won’t enable that feature.

Mothers are happy…a new toy for us to play with…very nice.
