PCOC

As John would say, I finally got my Pleasure Craft Operating Course (PCOC) completed online through the CPS website. While it’s not required over here in Italy, it is required to operate any boat back in Canada, and it will cover material I will need in future courses regardless of the jurisdiction we happen to be in.

audience-clapping-smiley-emoticon[1]Having spent quite a bit of time around lakes and rivers over the years, I was surprised at how much I didn’t know about safe boating. I guess you could say I “didn’t know what I didn’t know”. The course was just what I needed to get an understanding of the basics, and helped me recognize there’s so much more to learn.

The online course through CPS is presented in a straight-forward and simple manner that was easy to follow. I liked how the lessons were well organized around topics that followed a logical sequence, and offered additional info on some topics through short video clips to demonstrate a key point. At any time, it was easy to pause a lesson if there were distractions and re-start from where I left off, or begin the entire lesson over. The quizzes at the end of each lesson were helpful in preparing me for what to expect in the PCOC test.

Now that I’ve got the PCOC completed, I just started the CPS Sailing Course, which we already had the material for since John did it via the CPS Self-Study package. I’m doing this course next as we’ve just planned a trip to Malta to do a live-aboard course.

We’re looking forward to actually getting out on the water to experience handling a boat together, and I’m sure we’ll have plenty to write about after we’re back.
