Getting Rid of Our Stuff – Part 2

Similar to our first post here, we’ve had some pretty good luck selling our stuff since we moved to Colorado Springs. It really is surprising how much money you have locked-up in items you never really think of, and how willing people are to buy them from you. We’re currently at approximately $2000 and growing. hand-clap-smiley-emoticon[1]

The most frequent transactions are through eBay.

We had some good success with Craigslist initially, but it seems to have tapered off a bit.

Amazon is the least successful so far, and we think likely due to the sheer number of professional sellers who are selling the same items as loss-leaders at 1 cent, when we’re trying to make a few dollars.

To try and keep the selling trend going, we expanded into two other online sites that we only became aware of recently, Let It Go and eBay Classifieds.

We actually first heard about Let Go by watching the commercial on TV. It ‘s a pretty slick setup where you just install the app, take a picture of what you want to sell, and set your price. Somehow the app can even place the title of the item there for you, but only about 75% successfully. You do have to go back and check to make sure your item is actually titled correctly.

We were familiar with eBay Classifieds but under a different name. In Canada this site is called Kijiji. Wikipedia has a short history of the site, and it seems the US is the odd-man-out by not sticking to the original name, which evidently means ‘village’ in the Kiswahili/Swahili language of East Africa. Yes, that was a bit of a rabbit hole…

So now, we have the following places with our growing list of stuff listed for sale:

eBay Store

Amazon Seller’s Page

Craigslist

Let Go

eBay Classifieds

At times it does feel a bit like work. After coming home from a long day of my real job, having to package 3 eBay sales for mailing occasionally brings frustration instead of what should be the satisfaction of the sale.

We just have to keep our eye on the prize…
