Since I’m renting dock space from the owners of Calypso Sailing, a charter company in Key Largo, FL, a great opportunity presented itself yesterday. Calypso had to relocate a Leopard 58 called Lady Susan back down to Key West now that things are starting to return to normal and the cleanup has progressed a bit following Hurricane Irma. I couldn’t turn down an offer to come along.
There isn’t “merely” a fly-bridge but a complete second level up there with another galley/BBQ and enough room to have a dance. I cannot confirm any rumours of middle-aged men dancing on this trip however.
Look at the size of the engine room. Engine, water maker, a ladder and enough room for two men to stand up while working. Likely room for a third if required.
Since the winds were very light most of the way, we motor-sailed and averaged about 9kts for the 100nm mile trip. It took us just over 11 hours, and we reached our destination just as the sun was setting and the moon was rise at almost the same time. The crapping lens on my iPhone doesn’t do it justice.
We pulled into the beautiful Oceans Edge Marina and were met by Shannon and Ryan of Captain Shannon Charters, friends of Lance and Suzanne from Calypso. We put Lady Susan to bed, and since there was a while before her next charter, we had to ensure there were no spare Corona’s wasting away in her beer fridge…
A great day overall that went by surprisingly quick, and I got to see the area on the way down for when Christa and I are lurking around on our own causing havoc…
That must have been a pleasant day! Impressive!
